October of 2012 I decided to try running. My husband joined me on this journey which made it easier. We were able to push and support each other. We started training very slowly so we wouldn’t be discouraged by our early minimal results. By January we were getting the hang of running and were actually thinking of doing a 5K. Who me? Really? It just so happened that Yuengling Brewery (which is in our backyard) was hosting their first 5K so we signed up for the Yuengling Lager Jogger 5K, April 13, 2013. My husband and I ran the course a couple of times before race day, it was a very hilly course and I was starting to have second thoughts. When race day came I was nervous, but felt that my coach had prepared me for the race. It was a tough race but coming down the final stretch I cried not believing I actually completed it. I was so proud of myself. I still had work to do to try to get stronger because I was exhausted. We competed in 4 more 5K’s that year each time getting stronger.
After a year of running I started to wonder if I could do a small triathlon. I talked it over with my coach, he was very encouraging. The only thing I needed was a bike. In January of 2014 my husband and I purchased bikes, looked over the mini triathlon schedule and decided on the Upper Dublin Triathlon/Duathlon, May 18, 2014. The swim was in the pool at the high school which I hought was a good place to start. I would do the Tri and my husband the duathlon. The tri consisted of a 350 Meter swim, 11.2 mile bike and 5 K. I just wanted to try one triathlon. My husband and I went down the day before got our packets checked into hotel and biked the bike route and checked out the run route, seemed like they would be challenging but something I could handle. I was so excited not nervous at all.
